In this article we will look into the article that Neville wrote for the INTA bulletin. The article is called Fundamentals. In it, Neville talks about the three fundamental steps in conscious manifesting: Self-Observation, Definition and Detachment.

The first step towards the change and towards applying the Law consciously is to see where you are right now, to determine your current state. One easy exercise that you can try out is to describe the world around you. As Neville mentioned in this particular lecture, your description of the world around you is actually the confession of the self that you do not know. That is where you begin. That is the state that you want to change. The second step is to determine what it is that you really want. The final step is to completely dedicate yourself to this new story, to think from the state of the wish fulfilled.

In this article, Neville mentions that:

“Such a change cannot take place until the individual first discovers the self that he would change. This discovery can be made only through an uncritical observation of his reactions to life. The sum total of these reactions defines the individual’s state of consciousness, and it is the individual’s state of consciousness that attracts the situations and circumstances of his life.”

The change that Neville talked about here is the change of your state which is sometimes referred to as switching from the old story to the new story. Before you are ready to make such a change, it is important to note where you are right now, in this moment. What is your current state?

The way to determine one’s state is through observation of their reactions. To be more precise, the way to determine whether or not an individual has really changed their state is to determine whether or not the reactions to the world around them are aligned with their desired state or their old state. But to determine the “old state”, we use the same tactics. We simply observe our own reactions.

For the rest of this article, I will be using an example of Mary. She is manifesting her specific person, Francis. The example will be in italic, so that you can distinguish it more easily.

Let’s say that Mary familiarized herself with Neville’s work enough to know that the first step that she needs to take is to see where she is right now. What state is she in? We must keep in mind that this doesn’t mean that she has to uncover her limiting beliefs or anything like that. It simply means she has to determine what state she is in right now so that she can determine what exactly it is that she wants to change.

In this case, Mary’s desire is to manifest a specific person. She determines that her state right now is of the person who has been broken up with, abandoned. Francis, her specific person, is actually her ex boyfriend. Even though they didn’t end it on such a bad note, she still has these feelings that belong to the old state, the state of somebody who is not loved, who was abandoned. Now that she’s observed her state, she can start focusing on the opposite.

“Man in his blindness, is quite satisfied with himself, but heartily dislikes the circumstances and situations of his life. He feels this way, not knowing that the cause of his displeasure lies not in the condition nor the person with whom he is displeased, but in the very self he likes so much.”

An important thing we have to note, when it comes to that first fundamental, Self-Observation, is that we often don’t realize that these circumstances that we are trying to change are actually our own doing. Taking responsibility is a part of the first step. It is not so much about changing the circumstances that we are in as it is about changing the part of ourselves that created them.

What this means is that when you recognize that your current state is of the one who is not loved, you can change that state into the one of who is loved. It doesn’t mean you have to revise your entire life and remove all the memories of when you didn’t feel loved. It also doesn’t mean you have to dig up the assumptions that put you in that state. You simply have to recognize that it was your own state that got you into your current circumstances.

“At this moment, try to notice your inner state. To what thoughts are you consenting? With what feelings are you identified? You must be ever careful where you are within yourself.”

What state are you in right now? Are you in the state of the wish fulfilled? Are you thinking from that state, or are you still thinking from the state of desiring? Now, if you are in the state of desiring, that is perfectly alright. It simply means that you have to keep assuming that your wish is fulfilled until you naturally start thinking from that state. If you are visualizing or affirming persistently while in SATS, you will soon notice that your current reality feels like past and you will become so confident about your manifestations that anything contradictory will feel ridiculous. But to get to this point, you have to be persistent and imagine your wish fulfilled day in and day out. And no, I don’t mean that you need to affirm 24/7. That will, more likely than not, turn into vain repetition. It won’t work. To persistently imagine yourself in the state of the wish fulfilled, to live in the end is to feel the reality of your wish fulfilled while you are in state akin to sleep.

Marry is noticing that her state is changing now. She is no longer thinking from the state of not being in a relationship with Francis and only desiring it. She is now starting to think from the state of already being with him, of already being loved. She is noticing that after all those SATS sessions that she did, she is starting to feel like her manifestation had already happened, like it’s a memory. This, in turn, makes her present circumstances feel irrelevant as well. It makes them feel like past and she stopped reacting to them. If somebody mentions Francis to her, she no longer starts missing him or gets that weird feeling in her stomach that indicates that something is wrong between the two of them. Now, she is relaxed and calm. She is confident.

“Any time that an entirely new set of reactions enters into a person’s life, a change of consciousness has taken place, a spiritual rebirth has occurred.”

It is obvious now that Mary managed to change her state. If she observes her own reactions throughout the day, she will notice that her reactions have changed and therefore have a confirmation that she is now in a different state.

“…you must define the one you would like to be instead of the one you truly are in secret. With this aim clearly defined, you must, throughout your conscious waking day, notice your every reaction in regard to this aim.”

Because her state has changed, Mary no longer reacts the same way. As it was mentioned previously, when somebody mentions Francis, she no longer starts missing him. If she thinks about him, her first thought definitely isn’t, “I wonder if he will contact me” or, “He is still as stubborn as he always was and isn’t talking to me”. Her thoughts are different now.

If she catches an old thought, her reaction isn’t the same as it was in the past. In the past, if she thought about not being in contact with Francis, she would start feeling anxious and thinking, “How can I ever believe this works? He isn’t even talking to me!” Now, she would notice these thoughts and think, “These thoughts are from my old state. They are false and do not apply to my new state. Isn’t it wonderful I already have everything that I want?”

Now, this is something where I want to mention a question that many people ask when they first start this journey: doesn’t this make me delusional? The answer is no. It doesn’t make you delusional. Think about it! You have always manifested this way. You convinced yourself that something is true before you had any evidence of it. You took something from your physical reality and made up a story about it. Then you repeated it and felt its reality until it actually externalized. Besides this, I find that many people who ask this question are the ones that are either affirming mindlessly or using the technique of living as if. I implore you to drop both of these techniques immediately. In all honesty, these techniques shouldn’t even be considered by the beginners because they do not reach your subconscious mind. On the other hand, if you are persistently affirming or visualizing while in SATS, you won’t feel delusional when you look at your outside world because you won’t be trying to force yourself to see something different than what is currently showing up. Instead, you will have this quiet confidence, a peaceful knowing that what you want is coming. It is inevitable. These feelings certainly won’t make you feel delusional.

Back to Mary and how she used to react in the past. When Francis wouldn’t reply to her messages right away, she would assume that he is talking to other women. She had no evidence of that. To her, the only evidence that she needed was that he wasn’t replying instantly. She attached a complete story to this about him being interested in other women, about him communicating with them and perhaps not being loyal to her. Now, this didn’t only happen once. It happened everytime he didn’t respond instantly. Everytime he took the time to respond, she would start telling herself this story. She would start feeling betrayed and continue down that rabbit hole. After a while, this actually manifested. Because she repeated this story so many times with such conviction, feeling the reality of it, it externalized and it turned out that Francis was indeed talking to other women.

As you can see here, you can create a story that has no basis in fact. You can create a story without having any actual evidence of it. Everything that exists in this world right now was first imagined and without any evidence of its possibility, it was believed into existence.

Of course, Mary could have concluded that what she was feeling everytime he wouldn’t respond instantly was an intuitive feeling. Maybe even a psychic ability or a connection to Francis! If she didn’t know any better and wasn’t familiar with the Law, she would have continued creating her reality without knowing what she is actually doing. But, since she is familiar with the Law, she knows that the reason this manifested is because she focused on it and accepted it into her reality by repeating this story over and over again, feeling the reality of it again and again.

“…you can easily tell whether you are faithful to your aim in life by watching your reactions to the daily events of life.”

In this case, Mary was very faithful to this “end result”. The fact that it was something that she did not desire to experience is of no concern to the Law. She reacted the same way again and again, everytime Francis took a specific action. In a way, she was faithful to manifesting him being unfaithful. As Neville says:

“…your reaction will tell you the state from which you are operating.”

Mary was operating from the state of being betrayed. Instead, she should have detached from that state and attached herself to the state of already having her desire, the state of the wish fulfilled. In Neville’s words:

“The purpose of practicing detachment is to separate us from our present reactions to life and attach us to our aim in life.”

This is the last step in this entire process. When you are manifesting something consciously, your first step should be to see what state you are in, the second step should be to decide on what new story you wish to manifest. The third step is to detach from the current circumstances.

In the more general LOA community, people will often tell you that you need to detach from your desire in order for it to manifest. You need to let go. That is completely backwards. It doesn’t work that way. Because you are always in some state, the only thing you need to detach from is the current state if that state doesn’t serve you. For example, if you are manifesting money, you need to detach yourself from the state of being poor. Start thinking from your desired state. Start thinking from the state of being rich instead. You are not letting go of the desire. You are letting go of the unwanted state. And how do you start thinking from that state? How do you make this new state your “default” state, the one from which your thoughts are flowing effortlessly and automatically? By repeating the imaginal act and feeling its reality, over and over again!

“When we have no idea that our reactions are only states of consciousness from which it is possible to separate ourselves, we go round and round in the same circle of problems – not seeing them as inner states but as outer situations.”

When we don’t understand that we are always in one state or another, it’s not that hard to miss the obvious – that our reactions are actually coming from the states. But, states are not permanent. We can change states consciously. By observing our own reactions, we can tell what state we are in. Then, we compare this to the state in which we want to be. We ask ourselves, “What would it feel like if my desires were now fulfilled?” Would your reactions be the same? If the answer is yes, then congratulations! You are in the state of the wish fulfilled. If the answer is no, then you must detach from the current state and start thinking from the desired state. Or, as Neville says in this article:

“That is why we must formulate an aim and constantly notice ourselves in regard to that aim.”

As you can see, most of this is very repetitive. The reason it is repetitive is because it is actually very simple. It may not always be easy but it is simple. I am leaving the last word to Neville and his own summary of the fundamentals of conscious creating:

“This teaching begins with self-observation. Secondly it asks, “What do you want?” And then it teaches detachment from all negative states and attachment to your aim. This last state – attachment to your aim – is accomplished by frequently assuming the feeling of your wish fulfilled.

We must practice separating ourselves from our negative moods and thoughts in the midst of all the troubles and disasters of daily life. No one can be different from what he is now unless he begins to separate himself from his present reactions and to identify himself with his aim. Detachment from negative states and assumption of the wish fulfilled must be practiced in the midst of all the blessings and cursings of life.

We must constantly practice self observation, thinking from our aim, and detachment from negative moods and thoughts if we would be doers of truth instead of mere hearers.”
